Despite the incredible hardships, for my grandfather, I think he took comfort in this place between.
Between periods of violent extraction and displacement.
A place where the conflict of identity was made manifest, some good, some bad. In many ways, a moment, frozen.
Perhaps he took comfort in the blur; afterwards, he could never find firm footing, the rest of his life torn between:
Japanese in America, American in Japan.
